Gardening expert Tara Nolan shares this year’s colourful picks for gardens, pots and hanging baskets. Her first pick is Vineland’s 49th Parallel Collection Yukon Sun rose.
Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, just down the highway from Stoney Creek, has introduced four disease resistant and cold hardy roses, the 49th Parallel Collection. This year’s introduction is Yukon Sun, a gorgeous semi-double yellow rose that is compact and hardy to -35 C (zone 3a).

For its rose-breeding program, Vineland works with the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association and nursery collaborators across Canada who plant and evaluate candidates. Added to the mix are an in-house breeder who identifies the “parents,” a pathologist who’s an expert on plant diseases, a genomics lab and a consumer insights group. “It really is a team effort,” says Banks.
Yukon Sun is the latest addition to the popular Vineland’s 49th Parallel Collection of made-in-Canada roses. The bright yellow rose has been released by Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) and will be available in Canadian garden centres next spring.
Yukon Sun™ is a golden yellow colour rose with dark green foliage and early, continuous bloom. Growing to about 1 m in height, it is winter hardy to -35°C and moderately resistant to black spot and powdery mildew.
“Canadians have embraced these stunning Vineland roses since we first introduced the collection in conjunction with Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2017. We are excited to expand the collection once more with the addition of the first yellow rose,” says Vineland President and CEO Ian Potter, PhD. “Yukon Sun™ was specifically bred for the Canadian climate and will brighten any outdoor living space with its warm, sunny hues.”
With the late arrival of milder spring temperatures, gardeners are ready and eager to tackle a multitude of gardening tasks on their to-do lists. Simultaneously, many of us are visiting garden centres and shopping for plants. It may seem as though everything is happening at once. With frost still in the ground and the average final frost date still a few weeks away, patience is needed. Consider the rose, for example.
